Sited just below the village, this great vineyard is Moreau’s largest 1er Cru, even if it remains small at just over 0.3 of a hectare over two parcels. The first parcel, aged 70 years, sits on thin, very stony, calcareous soils, giving the wine finesse and plenty of salty minerality. The second parcel, aged 50 years, is located on slightly richer brown clay soils and produces a more opulent, layered wine. In the end, as the notes below make clear, the 2022 is stunning: a perfumed, lifted and incredibly rocky, mineral white Burgundy.

Benoît Moreau Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Maltroie 2022

Reviews

“Finer, airy, floral – so engaging. Airy in the mouth, too, with a more overt minerality –properly intense yet still delicious finishing. Love it!”
Bill Nanson, Burgundy Report
“The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Maltroie 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet with lilting aromas of Clementine, white tea and subtle crushed oyster shell that gain momentum in the glass. The palate is taut and fresh with lip-smacking salinity. There is real power here; it is very intense with an animated, rocky, almost uncompromising finish that feels extremely long. Another outstanding Chassagne from Moreau.”
94-96 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“Two plots, 45 and 65 year old vines, on brown clay for the former and limestone in the Crets subdivision for the other. Pale colour, white fruit with a touch of linseed on the nose, maintains both aspects in the mouth too. Certainly all in a white limestone fruit on the palate, almost a little severe behind, and very good persistence. Maltroie with character! Drink from 2027-2035. Tasted: November 2023.”
91-94 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
