The 1er Cru Champs Gain is in the heart of Chassagne-Montrachet, just below the famous En Cailleret. Like most of the surrounding crus, it is located on rich red clay soil. This profile is predisposed to give wines with a beautiful balance between juicy concentration and mineral finesse. Benoît vinifies grapes from a handkerchief-sized parcel of 70-year-old vines located on the upper part of the Premier Cru, where the soil is thinner and chalky, the vines quickly reaching the bedrock. These vines lie close to Moreau’s Maltroie parcels. The 2022 is a powerful, generous and seductive wine with ripe pear and apricot fruit and a lovely mineral kick to close.

Reviews

“Airy width but with extra density. In the mouth too, more serious intent with a more concentrated rendition of minerality but all delicacy at the edges. Floraly and long, long, long – another great wine!”
Bill Nanson, Burgundy Report
“The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Champ Gain 1er Cru has a very delineated, very pure bouquet with lemon ring, orange blossom, and light white peachy scents that develop in the glass, though I find other cuvées exuding more mineralité. The palate is well-balanced with a svelte opening, wild peach and light nectarine notes leading to a poised, tender finish. Maybe one of Moreau's more approachable 2022s? Superb.”
91-93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“Pale lemon yellow, slightly floral nose, and a suggestion of flesh to follow. The palate offers a good balance between orchard fruit and a mineral thread, as much personality as Maltroie, certainly in youth. Impeccable poise and persistence. Drink from 2027-2035. Tasted: November 2023.”
