Chassagne rouge is moving up in the world. Growers like Olivier Lamy, Thierry Pillot and Alex and Benoît Moreau (to mention only those producers we are following closely) show the heights this often-undervalued appellation can achieve through best-practice farming and excellent winemaking. The warmer seasons, too, have been helpful, bringing more approachable tannins when the wines are young. It’s from two small parcels of 50-year-old vines below the village. The 2022 fermented with 10% bunches and was aged with 15% new oak. It’s a generous, fleshy red Burgundy loaded with dark cherry, brown spices and star anise aromas and flavours. Super.

Benoît Moreau Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes Rouge 2022

Reviews

“Bursting with aromas of sweet red berries, orange zest and petals, the 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes Rouge is medium-bodied, supple and charming, with a generous core of fruit and soft, powdery tannins.”
88-90 points, William Kelley, The Wine Advocate
“It has a well-knit blackberry and bilberry-scented nose with hints of sea spray and Japanese nori. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, well-balanced with a touch of limestone on the entry. It is quite vertical in style with an understated almost Pommard-like finish. Excellent.”
91-93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“Benoît is looking for an airy style of red fruit rather than darker fruit and earthy. A fine clean mid purple. The nose and palate offer a decent density of red fruit with still some tannins, but they are fine grained. Some cherry touches to the finish, and nicely persistent. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: November 2023.”
90-92 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
