Bachelet-Monnot’s Bâtard-Montrachet comes from a 0.14-hectare postage stamp of 50-year-old vines at the cooler, Puligny end of Bâtard (right at the top of the slope and immediately below Le Montrachet) and is planted to a density of 15,000 vines per hectare. Low yields are standard, with the density making pruning ‘short’ with two short four-bud ‘baguettes’. This is consistently one of the most mineral and refined examples of Bâtard we have encountered. Even in sunny vintages, the power associated with this famous site manifests itself as intensity and drive rather than fat. The brothers picked their Bâtard on point in 2022, and the wine was raised in a one- and two-year-old 350-litre barrel. So, no new oak and only 800 bottles made. The notes below tell you all you need to know. Sadly, we have next to none.

Bachelet-Monnot Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet 2022

Reviews

“The 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru sees no new oak in this vintage. Its crystalline bouquet offers citrus peel, wet limestone and light wild fennel scents that unfurl in the glass. Very intense. The palate is striking on the entry with its sharp acidity, fresh and marine-influenced, strict and uncompromising. It's a wine that could only come from Puligny. It refuses to fan out on the finish, terse and classic in style. I admire its refusal to appease - one for the most serious white Burgundy lovers.”
94-96 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“Pale primrose colour. There is striking energy to the nose, a little bacon reduction, no new wood here, just 2 x 350 litre barrels, and then the expected massive power to the fruit on the palate. Concentrated white fruit but nothing heavy to finish. They feel that with this volume naturally in the fruit there is no need for new wood.”
