It was the Bachelet brother’s grandfather who first planted this vineyard, and the vines he put in the ground are now over 90 years old! Clos du Cromin is located on the north side of the Meursault vineyards, near the border of Volnay. Surrounded by dry-stone walls and with a south/southeast exposure, the soil is deep and rich in red clay, although there is still a lot of rock at the bottom. It’s a powerful terroir—a sunny site that ripens early—and equally conducive to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Marc and Alex Bachelet work with a small 0.21-hectare parcel of vines here—half of the vines are the original plantings (some of the oldest vines in Meursault), with the rest planted in 1998. Alex Gambal, Patrick Javillier and J. Confuron-Cotetidot also farm this vineyard, but in our experience, these growers typically craft a fleshier style of wine than the Puligny-esque B.M. example. This is deep and cool with a long, sappy finish.

Reviews

“The 2022 Meursault Clos du Cromin may lack a bit of bandwidth on the nose: quite strict citric fruit, a touch of grass clippings, and a bit closed on the day. The palate is well-balanced with good depth on the entry, orange rind, tangerine and grapefruit towards the long, if slightly attenuated, finish.”
87-89 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“Half was planted in 1929 and half in 2000. Alex thinks the young vines add to the old in terms of complexity in the final wine. The middle of the palate fills out beautifully, some fresh pears emerging towards the back, adequate acidity and excellent persistence. Very good once again.”
90-92 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
