This limited release is a blend of Shiraz from Bondar’s two oldest Rayner Vineyard blocks, planted in 1950. Block 24, in the northeast corner of the vineyard, contributes the lion’s share (75%). The dry-grown organically managed vines on this block sit on deep sandy soils flecked with ironstone rocks. The balance of the fruit is sourced from Block 1, situated in the northwestern corner of the vineyard on shallow clay soils over a limestone base. Again, these vines are dry-grown and organically managed.

The 2021 was fermented naturally with about 20% whole bunches before being matured for 18 months in mostly older French hogsheads (just five per cent new oak) before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Ideal growing conditions in 2021—light summer rains, warm days and cool nights—foreshadowed what could be one of the best vintages of the last decade in McLaren Vale, and this much is born out in this year’s Rayner Shiraz.

Bondar Rayner Vineyard Shiraz 2021

Reviews

"From the two oldest blocks on the vineyard, planted 1950 and ’60. Deep, brooding crimson purple. This is a faithful reproduction of variety and place – a meaningless statement unless I add 'of the highest quality,' which it is. It's velvet in the mouth, and mines all the black fruits, dark chocolate, licorice and spice hoped for. The tannins are polished, the oak absorbed by the fruit. So it is also a faithful reproduction of the vintage."
97 points, James Halliday, The Wine Companion
"Creamy, ripe black and blue fruit, nori and dried flowers. Medium-bodied, supple with dense chocolaty tannin, an oyster shell and black olive savoury element, and a rich but fresh finish of smoothness and excellent length. Floods the mouth with flavour and velvety texture. Really good."
94 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
"A dense purple hue and showing mulberry, mocha, and iodine aromas. Full bodied but well weighted with purple fruits meshing perfectly to rich mocha and oak spices and a deep boudin noir undertone. Great length and the tannins are subtle yet powerful, ensuring there's ample tension from start to the very long finish. Decanter time will see it blossom further."
95 points, Stuart Knox, The Real Review
