This ‘one-off’ Grenache is sourced from 120-year-old bush vines, in a dry-grown vineyard in McLaren Vale, with a gentle north-facing slope and deep sandy soils. These gnarled old vines give fruit with comparatively thick skins, providing ample texture around the fresh and pure red fruit characters. 40% whole bunches were used, and the wine was aged in older French puncheons for 10 months. This wine is a rare bird and will not be made again as the fruit source is no longer available.

Expect floral and herbal aromas around ripe and warm red fruits, some savoury undercurrents and a lovely liquorice tone. There’s incredible power and brooding intensity, with a plush texture and just right tannins. Balanced, with pure flavours and thumping presence, excellent stuff.

Reviews

“A rare beast, and likely a one off. A 30 dozen production from a 100 year old patch of Grenache in the McLaren Flat. !Hola. Rich, dark raspberry, nutty, some gum leaf and mint perfume, but so much power here. It’s distinctly minty and gum leafy, as is the way with many wines from this sub-region, but my word, the texture and old vine power here is superb. Raspberry, strawberry, spice, tastes like Cynar, or a delicious old school Amaro, with concrete dust tannin and super length. Such presence and impact. Unreal. A great and different expression of McV Grenache!”

"A single barrel hewn of the meagre yields inherent to centurion bush vines on McLaren Flat sands. A singular story to be told. Limpid and turbid in the glass. Damson plum of hue. I can smell the puncheons on this. More diaphanous and pinotesque than the sweater Higher Springs cuvée. The cloak of kirsch, pomelo, bergamot and pithy red cherry, underpinned by a carriage of saline freshness and bitter, gritty tannins, is something to drape oneself in and relish with every sip. This is what I look for in Australian wine, be it idyllic or otherwise: plenty of there, there."
