This is the fourth release of Rocca’s Barbaresco Cottà, one of the great Crus of Neive. Cottà was one of the first sites in Barbaresco to be produced as a single vineyard. The Rocca’s work with a micro-parcel of 50-year-old vines in the middle of the southwest-facing slope, adjacent to their Gepin (Barbera) parcel and directly facing the Ronchi vineyard. It is a tiny holding, producing no more than 2,000 bottles annually. The sand-rich, clay/marl soils and warmer microclimate produce generous yet fine wines that marry beautifully with Rocca’s elegant interpretation of Nebbiolo.

Albino Rocca Barbaresco Cottà 2019

Reviews

“Inviting aromas of toasted hazelnut, violet and ripe forest berry waft out of the glass along with a whiff of leather on this stellar red. Firmly structured and elegant, the savory palate is still young and primary but already shows juicy Morello cherry, cranberry, star anise and a hint of coffee bean alongside a backbone of fine-grained tannins. Vibrant acidity keeps it bright and balanced. Drink 2029–2044.”
96 points, Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast
“The 2019 Barbaresco Cottá is stellar. This is the first year the Cottá was vinified in oak (as opposed to steel), with about ten days of submerged cap maceration at the end. It offers up an exciting mélange of dark cherry, plum, spice, cedar, tobacco, incense and mocha that build into the heady, explosive finish. Medium in body, with striking depth, the Cottá is superb.”
95 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous
