The Meadowbank Pinot is drawn from a specific parcel of vines planted by Gerald Ellis in 1987 (which Pete thinks is probably a combination of MV6 and D5V12). The 2022 was hand-picked in two even lots over the course of two weeks. The earlier pick was completely destemmed while the later had riper stems, so was fermented with 50% whole bunches. After ferment, the wine was pressed to a mix of old and new (15%) French barriques where it rested for nine months before it was bottled without filtration.
The 2022 is a charming and immediately seductive release. Pretty Pinot fruits, perfumed florals and a pinch of spice align to a supple and silky texture, refreshing acidity and beautifully integrated, fine-grained tannins. It’s packed with juicy flavours and has drive and length for days. A moreish, pepper-flecked finish encourages a further pour. So much enjoyment here, through and through. Sadly, we don’t not have enough!

Reviews

“Pinot noir made by winemaker Peter Dredge from Gerald Ellis’ Meadowbank vineyard in the Derwent Valley. This a fine follow-up to the excellent 2021 wine. There is an instant appeal here as you pop your schnozz in the glass with spiced red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry coulis cut with hints of dried citrus blossom, smoked meats, sous bois, softly spoken cedary tones, struck flint and char siu. Fine, billowing river-silt tannins, a mineral-laden line and a nice umami nudge as the wine slowly retreats with gentle game, spice and savoury red fruits.”

“Nice shot, that. This is a svelte, perfectly balanced pinot noir with undergrowth, earth and twiggy spice notes threaded through chicory, red cherry and strawberry. This is one of those wines that just seems to take complexity in its stride, such is its harmony, such is its cohesion. There’s a freshness to this but also a depth; it skips along but leaves an impression. It’s good now but it will age well." 93+ points
