Indigene is based on Barossa’s wonderful resource of old-vine Shiraz and Mataro (aka Mourvèdre). This year’s blend was sourced exclusively from some of Spinifex’s oldest, dry-grown Shiraz (52%) and Mataro (48%) vineyards located in Ebenezer, Moppa and an elevated site in Eastern Barossa. The fruit was hand-harvested, cooled overnight and destemmed before naturally fermenting. For the Shiraz component, 30% whole bunches were retained. Natural fermentation took place in small steel and wood fermenters for between 10 and 24 days, then the wine was pressed into a selection of puncheons and demi-muids (40% new) for 20 months prior to bottling—unfined and without filtration.
This has always been Pete Schell’s ode to old-vine Barossa but with his own twist. It’s immediately appealing, with deep and captivating aromas of dark fruits, plenty of florals and spice. The complex palate is richly flavoured and textured. Tight tannins and driving fresh berry acidity complement the potency, fleshy/plump weight and noteworthy length. That said, it is still a pup, with plenty of excitement to come. 2021 is a brilliant rendition of Indigene that fans should not miss.
