Screwcap. Unfortified. Along with the Navazos-Niepoort bottling, La Bota de Florpower is Navazos’ second single-vineyard white wine and inspired by a period in Andalucían wine history before fortification was the norm. While the Navazos-Niepoort is sourced from Jerez's de-facto Grand Cru vineyard, Macharnudo Alto, this wine comes from Sanlúcar’s own blue-ribbon (and most revered) terroir, the pago Miraflores.

Specifically, the Palomino is sourced from 55 and 85-year-old Palomino vines in the La Baja “lieu-dit” of Miraflores. As opposed to the power and structure of Macharnudo in Jerez, here the Tosca Cerrada albariza soils give more roundness and floral charm to the wines, as well as plenty of the oyster shell/iodine salinity that we expect of Sanlúcar wines. There are some waxy, complex, reductive and secondary notes from the time aging under flor and also some gentle nuttiness from the sherry cask.

Seeking to instil more vineyard character in this bottling, the Navazos team has embarked on a shorter aging cycle. Bottled at 11.5%, the 2021 was fermented in 600-litre Jerez casks and aged under flor for eight months until it was bottled at the end of June 2022. Previous bottlings could be aged for significantly longer so you can expect even more clarity and saline vibrancy. It’s just starting to open and offers plenty of seductive flesh and loads of interest. A superb and unique white wine.

Reviews

“Palomino Fino from Sanlucar. Bottled in July 2022. Old vines in Miraflores, always the same vineyard close to the ocean, vines over 50 and over 80 years old. They have ‘shifted from an idea connected to flor to an idea connected to vineyard; now we are convinced process is less important than terroir’. This was bottled later than Navazos Niepoort originally but now usually one year after the harvest. 4,000 bottles made. Tangy and pungent but overall quite soft on the palate. Real grip on the end which makes up for the low acid. A distinctly floral quality. With time these wines go orange but still stay fresh.”
