This is the second release of Sol Solice, a wine that captures the best of Spinifex’s Grenache in a given season. The inaugural release caused quite a stir, and the 2023 looks set to continue that trend. In 2023, the fruit was sourced from three vineyards: Spinifex’s own Rostein Vineyard high in the Eden Valley; the mature Neldner Vineyard in Seppeltsfield; and Saleyards Vineyard in the foothills of the Eastern Ridge between Barossa and Eden valleys. The three hectares of Grenache in Rostein Vineyard were planted in 2018. At 490 metres above sea level, Pete says it’s the highest Grenache block in South Australia. These are all organically managed, dry-grown sites, and the farming is done by hand. Vine age ranges from six to 60 years old.

All the fruit was picked by hand. Three-quarters of the fruit was destemmed and fermented in a combination of small, open-top vessels and terracotta amphora for two weeks. The balance fermented as bunches for six weeks. After pressing, the wine matured in seasoned wood for 11 months before bottling without fining or filtration.

Reviews

“Full ruby red hue. Ultra fragrant nose of crushed raspberry, musk stick, white pepper and morcilla. Palate is medium weighted and offers a cornucopia of spices over bright sweet raspberry fruits. Acidity has a lifting roll early, adding air and crunch then fine gravelly tannins bring focus and tension to the incredibly long finish. There is so much packed in here but its intensity never translates as overt weight, nor feels forced. A benchmark for modern Barossa grenache.”

“I remember loving this wine last year and blow me down if it isn't on form again this year. It's a blend of grenache from the Rostein, Vinya Vella and the Neldner vineyards, 25% whole bunch. It just ticks all the boxes. It's succulent like a Chinese meal. The fruit is pure and vibrant, all plum, blueberry and cherry, daubed with exotic spice, earth, ginger cake, charcuterie, citrus blossom, fig paste and dried citrus rind. Chalky in tannin with a sapid mineral cadence, it is just so lovely to drink.”
96 points, Dave Brookes, The Wine Companion
“This has levity and vitality, a coolness to fruit profile despite a sense of concentration. It stretches long, fine ribbons of tannin dragging grippy and silty through the wine, some woody spice, sweet tobacco notes, but the mainstays are black plum, choc-cherry, vanilla cream, albeit in a lighter accord. It’s potent and has a sense of seriousness and then lifts and tightens. The finish ripples with woody spices and salted liquorice. Good gear.”
