Alberto Oggero’s parcel in the commune of Valle Dei Lunghi is nicknamed ‘The Outsider’. It’s a site within the Anime vineyard of Santo Stefano that’s sparse and almost wild in appearance, interplanted with 80-year-old guyot-pruned Arneis and Nebbiolo vines. The higher proportion of clay in the otherwise sandy soil provides greater extract, and the resulting wine is tightly bound to the soil where it grows. The fruit was picked by hand, and spent 14 days on skins in concrete. Maturation took place in cement tanks over 14 months, followed by one year in bottle before release. A staff favourite, this is a nod to the ancient vines and their site—a completely out-of-the-box expression of Arneis.
