Named after the aristocrat who was once the landlord of this parcel, La Pièce au Comte was the Tremblays’ first vineyard holding in Chablis. Covering a single hectare, it lies in the heart of Fourchaume, and until 2014, its oldest vines were 80 years old (having been planted in 1934). These vines have since been replanted with mass-selection cuttings, although the remainder still date from the 1950s.

Romain Bessin explains that the vines here suffer from court-noué, which causes a decline in vigour and leads to more concentrated sugars and acidity. The resulting wine is deep and powerful, at once more intense and exuberant than the Fourchaume yet also more weightless and crystalline. The maturation was split equally between tank and barrel (less than 10% new).

Reviews

“Old vines, little grapes, often less ripeness. 50% wood is used for this cuvee. Another really pale colour. A huge burst of flavour at the back of the palate, not riper but richer. Good fresh acidity, the oak gives a lactic lick. There’s a lot of wine here. Splendid finish.”
93 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
“Narrower, more direct – here with a hint of aromatic barrel today. There’s an extra shimmer to the width of flavour here – more shimmering with energy and fluidity too – this is simply a great wine. A treat!!”
