The limited production La Guiraude is Graillot’s tête de cuvée—made only in vintages where there are wines that exhibit particularly intense and ageworthy personalities. It’s a barrel selection, so the winemaking is the same as the classic Crozes, although the chosen casks age longer in both barrel and bottle. The Graillots are quick to point out that La Guiraude is not necessarily seen as a better wine than the domaine’s Crozes; instead, it is typically more powerful, spicier, and perhaps calling for longer cellaring. However, we can safely say it often is better, and in 2022, it is considerably so. It’s still slightly ‘wild’ but also deep and layered—a kind of mini-Hermitage. Powerful yet remains ‘classic’ and savoury in style with a long, sappy, meaty close.

Reviews

“A remarkable Crozes-Hermitage with drive, structure and plenty of texture. The nose reveals notes of cassis, dark cherries, currants, violets and warm spices. Medium-bodied with fine tannins. Chalky and focused, with a juicy core of cherries mingling with the violets. Lively and precise with a serious, compact finish at this stage. Try after 2026."

“The bouquet is wide, dark, intense, close-knit for now, gives a blackcurrant, smoky black cherry aroma, plenty of unfurling to do. The palate holds good, compact content which will serve as a good platform for the future; it reaches into the depths of its soils, is akin to a Hermitage from the eastern end of that appellation, carries mystery and potential. There is a good, tenacious offer of juice late on, the tannins correctly ripe.”

“Perfumed aromatics here with lavender, floral black cherries and some cured meat. The palate has freshness, firm tannins and sleek black fruits, but also some stern savoury elements with herbs, iodine and gravel. There’s freshness and a lot of latent energy here: this is for cellaring, and it will be quite beautiful in time.”
