Rieslaner is a cross between Sylvaner and Riesling developed in 1921. Despite being a lesser-known grape, this is one that plays an important role in the history of this Domaine. It was Hans-Günter Schwarz (the legendary cellar master that made the wines here from 1962 to 2002) who brought Rieslaner to Müller-Catoir and planted it in the Herzog vineyard of Haardt. Schwarz made some fabled sweet wines from Herzog Rieslaner (which are nigh impossible to find) and since 2003 Franzen has enthusiastically taken up the torch. Rieslaner’s inclination to botrytis (even in dry years) whilst retaining its high acidity makes it Müller-Catoir’s most reliable ‘sweet wine’ variety. Indeed, in 2020, this grape was the only variety to take on any botrytis at this address, and even then, only to a fairly limited extent.
Alcohol 11.5%; acidity 9.2 g/L; residual sugar 91.1 g/L.

Müller-Catoir Herzog Rieslaner Auslese 2020

Reviews

“A touch of mushroom from botrytis on the nose, but way more exotic fruit, particularly papaya. Eucalyptus, too. Great power and textural complexity on the full-bodied palate, the sweetness very discreet for this category. Wonderful lime-zest freshness at the finish.”
95 points, Stuart Pigott, James Suckling
