This is the fourth release of Mickey Downer’s Vis-à-Vis. The fruit was sourced from Murdoch’s own Oakbank vineyard, with its sandy loam soils, lightly peppered with quartz. This site gives the winemaker the lifted, violet-and-red-fruited profile he’s chasing for this spicy, sappy, Loire-inspired red. The fruit was hand-picked and 100% destemmed, then racked into mostly older (only 10% new) French barriques, where it rested for ten months.

Reviews

“Dark chocolate, leafy herbs, salt bush, arrowroot biscuits and warmed mixed nuts in scent and flavour. Juicy and dark fruited in the palate, a crisp line of tannin and acid keeping things fresh and frisky. Delicious drink.”
93 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
"Packed with briary and brambly red-berry aromas, together with plenty of spice, smoky whole bunch notes, pepper, dark chocolate and sappy freshness. The palate has a smooth, darker-berry core of flavor with glossy, ripe tannins delivering a really neatly rendered finish. Drink now. Screw cap."
93 points, Nick Stock, jamessuckling.com
"The grape of Bordeaux is well suited to the Adelaide Hills. The essential floral prettiness and red-fruited intensity are all here, together with some smart oak management. Sports a charming perfume of violet, anise, plum, raspberry and choc-mocha. The palate's supple tannins make for a smooth textural feature as the sweet fruit flavours move across the tongue. Layers of lifted spice bring added interest."
92 points, Jeni Port, The Wine Companion
