Noval’s Vintage Port is a single-quinta wine, the grapes passing a strict selection program from Noval’s own vineyards on the slopes of Douro’s Cavadinha tributary. The 2020 vintage marks the 10th Port declaration in a row for Quinta do Noval, and this year’s declaration represents only seven per cent of the estate’s entire production. Each year, the blending proportions for the Vintage Port will vary depending on those varieties which performed best. The 2020 is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinto Cão, Sousão, and Tinta Roriz (very little Touriga Francesa was used in 2020)—all foot-trodden in temperature-controlled granite lagares. The wine was matured for 18 months in old wooden barrels.

The vines at Noval always gift Ports of tremendous elegance and purity, traits that fit the widely declared 2020 vintage like a glove. Bottled in May 2022 with 115 grams of residual sugar, this is a profound Noval of exceptional clarity and sensual power.

Reviews

“The 2020 Vintage Port from Noval, which was picked from 1 to 22 September, has a residual sugar of 115g/l. It is forward and lively on the nose with macerated black cherries, cassis, raisin and pressed iris flowers. Fine delineation and focus. The palate is medium bodied with an attractive peppery entry. Lively, good depth and density, this is very focussed with impressive structure behind it. Yet there is no heaviness and there is just the right amount of salinity to keep it on its toes on the finish. Exquisite.”
97 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“From an early harvest after a hot summer which produced a small quantity of super-concentrated wines: wonderful inky-crimson colour; closing down on the nose but with underlying ripe plum and berry fruit, almost minty and exotic in its ripeness; made in a deliberately rich style with more residual sugar than normal, dense on the palate with broad ripe, gravelly tannins and a big expansive finish. Still a little raw but with beautiful opulence overall and nothing baked or stewed here, despite the heat and power of the vintage.”
97 points, Richard Mayson, Decanter
"The freshness is unbelievable. The palate comes with its very own brand of elegance: a barely tamed wilderness that speaks of fragrant fruit, captured at a moment of dewy freshness, unnerving in its apparent glory. This is a kind of elixir. Wonderful, bold, elegant, sleek, profound - and completely delicious."
99 points, Anne Krebiehl, Falstaff.com
"There is undoubtedly a lusciousness that works beautifully here, and this might make one think that this is a more forward vintage in terms of drinking, but the cooling tannins put the brakes on. This allows this wine some well-deserved cellar time because it needs at least a decade to compose its exuberant thoughts before it decides in which direction it will travel."
