The Latin saying that Bacchus loves the hills—Bacchus Amat Colles—is hardly more appropriate than when discussing the Douro highlands, not to mention how Noval traversed the testing 2022 vintage with flying colours. Noval’s 150 hectares of primarily high-altitude, high-density vineyards are focused predominantly on the steep schistous hillsides of the Vale de Mendiz terroir, four kilometres from Pinhão. Despite the size of the vineyard, the Vintage Port is made from a draconian selection of only the very best lots from different vineyard plots. To give you some idea of the rigorous selection, the 2021 VP was made from 4% of Noval’s total harvest, while 2022 drew on a whopping 7%! These factors sing loud and clear in the wines themselves. Not only do the bespoke selections mean the wines continually outperform the vintage, but they are also perhaps the most vinous and elegant of all the Vintage Ports. The French-owned Noval wines have been described as more subtle and seductive than the English-owned houses. Yes, these are epic wines: dark, id-like expressions that immediately situate the drinker at the centre of the universe (to paraphrase Henry Miller). Yet, they are also wonderfully balanced, layered and mouthcoating wines that, once tasted, are hard to forget. We have often said that Noval is a Port producer like no other. More accurately, we should say Port grower. Unlike the other famous names of Port, Noval is a single estate, or Quinta, and governs every step of production from vine to bottle. The viticulture is second to none in the region, and the cellar is likewise run with meticulous precision by Carlos Agrellos, nephew of legendary cellarmaster António Agrellos, who retired at the end of 2017. Of course, no conversation about Quinta do Noval is complete without mention of the most revered Vintage Port of them all: the iconic single-vineyard Nacional. Alongside the wonderful new 2022 Vintage Port and Nacional, we also offer a small selection of back vintages.
