Noble Rot - Issue 30: Don’t Sulphur Fools

In Noble Rot’s 30th Issue, Editor Dan Keeling asks, “Are the Sulphur Wars finally coming to an end?”. Keeling’s impassioned essay reels in the recent experiences of two talismans of the zero-sulphur movement, quotes the Bird (Charlie Parker) and, ultimately, argues for a cessation of hostilities. “We’re delighted that divisions over one of the most important methods for wine preservation and hygiene are fast giving way to a middle ground,” writes Keeling. Amen.

Domaine Goisot: Biodynamic Burgundy That Won’t Break the Bank

The bewitching 2019 vintage delivered a super-rare combination of ripeness and freshness, with acidity levels similar to the exciting and racy Chardonnay vintages of ‘17 and ‘14. To quote Allen Meadows: “Fans of the domaine are used to seeing it consistently outperform with the modest appellations that it has, and they have done so again in 2019.”

Exopto: Outstanding Old Vine & Single Vineyard Rioja

Much has transpired since we last visited Tom in Spain. Having arrived on a shoestring in 2003, Puyaubert now farms 30 plots spread across 22 hectares of vines (the majority of which are over 60 years old) in the western Sonsierra villages of Ábalos, San Vicente and Baños de Ebro. His latest acquisition was two hectares in Baños de Ebro in 2019, whose 60+-year-old Tempranillo and Viura vines will further underpin the quality of Puyaubert’s Horizonte label.

Massolino: 2018 Barolo and the "Absolutely Stunning" [Galloni] 2016 Vigna Rionda

During last year’s Massolino masterclass, Giovanni Angeli promised us a special 2022 release. He wasn’t kidding. This year would see the release of what Angeli describes as one of the greatest wines Massolino has ever produced—the 2016 Vigna Rionda Riserva. Then, there is the not-so-small matter of the estate’s 2018 Barolo, which seems like an excellent place to start.

  • Toolangi: Gin Ginie, The Scintillating 2021 F Block Chardonnay

Toolangi: Gin Ginie, The Scintillating 2021 F Block Chardonnay

Next year will mark Kaspar Hermann’s fifth vintage as chief winemaker, and under his site-first approach—allowing the place and vintage to dictate the result rather than forcing a particular style—the true character of this block is beginning to emerge. Put simply, Toolangi’s F-Block should now be counted among the Yarra Valley’s finest Chardonnay vineyards, and Hermann’s 2021 release has set a new benchmark for this bottling.

  • Terroir al Límit: “Wines of great purity” From 2019 to 2021

Terroir al Límit: “Wines of great purity” From 2019 to 2021

Next to the relatively serene 2018 vintage, 2019 was a more tumultuous year in the vineyards. And, while the meagre yields delivered power, it’s a power worn lightly by a beautiful set of wines wreathed in minerality and reverberating with superb, balancing freshness. It’s a year that lovers of this defining producer should feel right at home with. In terms of yields alone, 2020 was even less obliging...

Domaine de Marcoux: 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (and friends) From a Biodynamic Artisan

Sophie Armenier speaks of her latest release Châteauneuf as “elegant, supple and balanced, combining freshness and delicacy”. The Marcoux 2020s are wines of vibrancy, precision and real drinkability, with silky tannins and graceful acidity contributing to subtle structures: they are deep and flavourful wines without being colossal.

  • Domaine Chermette, 2021 Beaujolais

    Domaine Chermette, 2021 Beaujolais

2022’s visit with Domaine Chermette was our fourth in Beaujolais, so we had a fair idea of what to expect. William Kelley’s note above really says it all. Pierre-Marie used the French phrase “très digeste” to broadly describe the style of the vintage. Translated literally, this is a rather prosaic ‘very drinkable’, but in the French tongue it carries connotations of prettiness, freshness and elegance. That’s 2021 Beaujolais for you.

Santiago Ruiz - Sip into Spring: Textural, Mouth-Watering Whites from a Beacon of Albariño

We’re delighted to have this grower’s wonderful Albariño back in stock. The Ruiz family’s winemaking roots on Galicia’s Atlantic coast go deep. Ángel Ruiz, the grandfather of the eponymous Santiago, was making wine here in the 1860s and was one of the first people to bottle wines from the region. Today, the estate is run by Santiago’s daughter Rosa, aided by the winemaking smarts of Luisa Freire.

Introducing Midnight Mixers - World Class Craft Mixers, Made in Australia

After two years of burning the midnight oil, two years of planning, intense product development and drawn-out production trials, we are finally ready to release our very own Midnight Mixers range.
