New Release Garagiste Merricks Pinot Gris and Rosé, Plus the 2021 Terre de Feu and Terre Maritime

2022 represents an outstanding vintage for Garagiste, one this grower believes will rival, if not exceed, the quality of the much-lauded 2021. For several years now, Barney Flanders has been talking about promoting his Stagiaire Pinot Gris and Rosé to the Merricks label, and this small but beautiful, vintage has provided the incentive. From 2021, we can now welcome the flagship Terre de Feu Pinot Noir and Terre Maritime Chardonnay bottlings after a year’s hiatus.

Massolino - The First Course: The Knockout 2020 Langhe Nebbiolo, and Friends…

The wines on Massolino’s undercard have never tasted finer. Nick Stock put it impeccably when, back in 2015, he described the range as “near-perfect”. Since that time, the Massolino team has only made further progress in both their vineyards and cantina. They are harvesting more pristine grapes than ever before, and the move towards ever-gentler winemaking shines through in the wines’ purity and effortless balance.

Lambert Wines: Crudo Extra Virgin Olive Oil

A little background to start. In 2017 Luke Lambert and Rosalind Hall purchased a tract of land in Glenburn, just north of the Yarra Valley near the town of Yea. When complete, the vineyard will be planted exclusively to Nebbiolo, comprising six clones on three different rootstocks at three different densities. Alongside their vines, and in true Tuscan style, the duo also nurture an organic olive grove. For now, five varieties are planted on just one acre.

Quealy: Maritime Magic from 2020 and 2021

While much of the historical narrative surrounding Quealy has focused on the winemaking side of matters, the story of its vineyards makes it quite clear that the team are wine growers first and winemakers second—and proper ones at that. These pioneers came to their region, looked closely at its potential, chose sites, and planted varieties that they felt would excel. The farming practice and winemaking has evolved from there.

Domaine de l’Oratoire St Martin - Biodynamic Rhône

Frédéric and François Alary have now handed over the keys of their storied 25-hectare Cairanne estate. The new owners are the Abeille-Fabre family, owners of the impressive Château Mont-Redon in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. At the time the sale was announced, Pierre Fabre spoke of inheriting the “best terroir in Cairanne.” And so, earlier this year, we looked forward to catching up with the new owners to taste the latest wines and get the low-down on Fabre’s plans.

The New Swinney Releases: Set your Phasers to Stunning

In the blink of an eye, this producer has ripped up the rule book about what was considered possible in the Frankland River region. We have written at length on what makes this vineyard so important in the pantheon of Australian viticulture. Rooted in ironstone gravel hilltops above the Frankland River, the Swinneys produce very limited volumes of wine, cherry-picking a tiny percentage of their parcels for their own label.

Pyramid Valley, Pastures New : The Scintillating New Collections

From the outset, Steve Smith has made it clear that his vision for Pyramid Valley is to seal its place as one of the world’s great producers of cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. It’s fair to say that with the 2019 release Smith and his team wasted little time in this quest. Now, we have the next stage of evolution: to illuminate the distinct personalities and winemaking philosophies behind each wine, the Appellation Series has been split into two collections.
