You know what? We thank our lucky stars for the day Damien Courbet asked his close friend David Croix: ‘How would you like to make wine with me in Jura?’ 2022 is the fourth vintage of this micro-négoce; each year, the wines only get more exhilarating. Not only is the quality off the scale this year, but 2022 is by far the largest (small) release to date, and the first year we have received anything close to what we asked for. From the 2022 harvest onwards, Croix and Courbet are working with an established grower based in Château-Chalon. Not only has this given rise to two new cuvées in the portfolio—a staggeringly lovely white blend and single-vineyard Chardonnay—but from the 2023 vintage, the pair will also release their first reds, a Poulsard and Trousseau, both from old vines. So, the domaine’s two largest years (which is not saying much given the small size of the project) precede its smallest: in 2024, it harvested 14 hl/ha. For those lucky enough to have tasted Croix’s rare but frighteningly good white Burgundies, it will come as no surprise that the style of the wines hinges on purity and tension. Don’t come here looking for overtly oxidative Savagnin sous voile or yeasty-fuzzy Chardonnay. On the contrary, these wines are all kept topped up; both growers believe the Burgundy-style ouillé method is the best lens to see just how special the Jura’s terroirs can be. As for the new wines, we hope our notes do the talking. 2022 is a great vintage, and to a tee, these wines are silken, pristine and vibrating with energy: a showstopping fusion of jurassien personality and Burgundian precision.
