Joh. Jos. Prüm ’22

A Thrilling Vintage from a Legendary Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm ’22

Mosel Riesling is one of the most distinctive, graceful and transparent wines on the planet, and Joh. Jos. Prüm stands tall as one of its most revered and eloquent ambassadors. Thanks to the more generous yields of 2022, this is the first time in many years that we have been able to offer a selection of this domaine’s wine to a wider audience. What is more, 2022 is a fabulous vintage for this historic estate. From Kabinett to Goldkap, the wines are vibrant and pure, with fabulous energy and superb depth and intensity. The higher Prädikats offer exquisite layers of fruit to go with their sparkling acidities. We often say that wine is a kind of bottled energy, and no producer packs more voltage into their bottles than Joh. Jos. Prüm.

In The Finest Wines of Germany, Stephan Reinhardt writes: “No matter what kind of mood you are in, the world always seems a better place with a glass of Prüm in hand; these are gracious, charming wines that go straight for the heart leaving you only with the desire to finish the bottle quickly, resolving to finish a second bottle more slowly and reflectively.” So, what is the secret to the magical quality of the J.J. Prüm wines? How is it that they differ so much in style and quality from the wines of most other Mosel producers? The answer, as always, lies mostly in the majesty of the vineyards, backed up by meticulous winemaking: great sites, old vines, the lowest yields, very late harvesting and selection of only the best berries.  The winemaking is as natural as possible with as little intervention as possible. And there you have it. The wines typically need several years to start showing their best and can live and develop for decades.

All four of Prüm’s legendary vineyards share the same soils—grey and blue Devonian slate—and south-to-southwest aspects. They sit alongside each other on the prestigious strip of the Middle Mosel between Bernkastel and Zeltingen. These vineyards have been in continuous production for some 2,000 years! The major differences between the sites have to do with the variations in the aspect, steepness and depth of the soil. It sounds so subtle, yet the resulting wines are all wonderfully distinctive.

What is behind the consistency and greatness of J.J. Prüm? There are five main pillars:
  1. Great sites: The four vineyards offered below have centuries of recorded history and are some of the most revered of the Middle Mosel.
  2. Old, ungrafted vines: 90% of the estate’s vines are ungrafted with an average age exceeding 60 years. There are several key parcels aged between 70 and 100+ years. This has all kinds of implications for yield and quality.
  3. Precise picking dates: Every parcel is picked only when perfectly ripe (subject to Prädikat) and often with multiple passes. In the past, J.J. Prum was known for late picking (to achieve ripeness); now, it’s all about picking each parcel at precisely the right moment(s) for the wine in question!
  4. Natural yeast, unhurried fermentations, and patient aging on lees: The wines are never rushed and are only bottled when ready. This extra time on natural lees means the wines absorb everything the lees have to give. (This sometimes means some gentle reduction and wines that need a little time to unwind.)
  5. The Prüm family are perfectionists: They are interested only in producing greatness and honouring the remarkable vineyards and ancient vines they are blessed to farm.

Joh Jos Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 2022

Joh Jos Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 2022

Where the 2019s and 2021s need a few more years to hit their straps, Prüm’s 2022 Kabinetts are already shining. As usual, the power builds from Bernkastel to Graach to Wehlen. Each shows the majesty of this vintage in their own way. Given the reviews, we probably don’t need to say more. Overall, the wines are wonderfully fresh and balanced. Although they will mostly be drunk young, they will also improve for five to 10 years, and 20 years will not weary them. They could effortlessly stand up to a broad range of flavours: sashimi, lighter Asian dishes and tuna tartare, for example. But any seafood or white meat, and of course, they make beautiful aperitifs.

“This wonderful Mosel Kabinett has a wide spectrum of white tree fruit, wild berry and herb aromas. Impressive concentration on the very focused light-bodied palate. I love the racy acidity and pronounced slatey minerality that is wrapped around the very long and clean finish. Drink or hold.”

“The 2022 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett has the slightest crackle of flint on the shy nose. Fennel and nutmeg appear before orange peel joins in. The palate is light, with a lovely, smooth, lithe backdrop of sweet mandarin and clementine. The 2022 is tart, sweet, ripe, aromatic and rather serene with just a touch of zestiness. Lovely length and much charm. (Off-dry)”

“Here is a great Mosel Kabinett that needs a bit more time to show what it is really made of. Still very young with a pronounced yeasty character that slowly recedes with aeration, but the white peach and honeysuckle aromas that emerge are stunning. Extremely vibrant and precise, the slatey acidity making this fabulously graceful. As pure as an Alpine stream running with glacier water. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.”

“The 2022 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett does not really want to show itself on the nose. But the palate presents immediate clarity and poise. This is laser-straight elegance, stone and citrus. This shows such pedigree, such clarity. So poised, so mouth-watering, so stony. (Medium)”

Joh Jos Prüm Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spätlese 2022

Joh Jos Prüm Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spätlese 2022

At this level, the Prüm wines are still light in body, but the flavour intensity and depth of character go up markedly, and the 2022s deliver a mesmerising balance between elegance, freshness, racy fruit and slate-like minerality. There is considerably more depth of fruit here than in the Kabinett-level wines, although not necessarily more overt sweetness. Instead, it is a question of more flesh, more power and, therefore, wines that can stand up to richer food. Katharina Prüm believes this category is the most versatile at the table. We agree.

Again, as the notes below attest, 2022 is a stunning vintage for Prüm’s Spätlese. These wines are already thrilling to taste but will continue gaining depth and complexity for decades. “Overall, I think 2022 is a Spätlese vintage for us,” says Katharina Prüm. “I was really taken aback by how all wines remained so fresh and with good acidity despite the heat of the vintage. In this sense, 2022 reminds us of 2020. Both vintages are drinking very well young, even if they can also keep for decades, of course.”

“This reminds me so much of English hedgerows in summer with their diversity of flowers, berries and herbs. Cool and elegant in spite of the impressive ripeness on the medium-bodied palate. Very polished through the impeccably balanced, subtle finish. Hard to believe that analytically this must have a significant amount of grape sweetness, because it’s almost invisible. Drink or hold.”

“The 2022 Riesling Bernkasteler Badstube Spätlese again shows a little tease of chervil, a touch of aromatic green citrus, not quite bergamot, but very aromatic. Once these notions have dissipated, a riper sense of citrus comes through, plunging right into Navel orange and tangerine territory. The 2022 is serene, beautifully clear-cut, light-footed, elegant and balanced. (Medium)”

“Wonderfully peachy nose with just a hint of caramelized apple. Lovely succulence on the silky, medium-bodied palate. Very long finish in which the ripeness and wet stone freshness are exactly balanced. Already excellent integration of the restrained grape sweetness. Drink or hold.”

“The 2022 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese is shy, but stone fruit shimmers through; think white peach and golden Mirabelle. The palate falls into step with citrus-edged, golden Mirabelle plums, fresh, almost sorbet-like in their heightened impression. The beauty here lies in restraint and absolutely harmonious balance. This is not much sweeter than a Kabinett, just a little fuller, rounder, but still svelte, elegant, full in flavor, light on its feet and medium sweet only. Wonderful. (Medium)”

“Striking nose of garden herbs with just a hint wet earth underlining the delicate white tree fruit aromas. Stunning concentration and energy on the super-straight medium-bodied palate. Very long, almost perfectly balanced finish that is surprising for this category at this early stage in the wine’s development. Great slate expression. Drink or hold.”

“The 2022 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese is rather closed. Distant fruit appears as though behind glass where you can see but not touch. The palate is a juicy, rounded but tingling picture of tangerine. Aromatic, deliciously tart but wonderfully ripe, with that scented, balancing, zesty tang of tangerine peel. The 2022 shows poised balance, sweetness, extended, aromatic length and real elegance. (Medium)”

“Here’s a very classic Mosel Spatlese with exactly the combination of richness, elegance and delicacy that makes this category unique. Such delicate white peach and sliced pear, rose and honeysuckle aromas. Very long finish that is as succulent as it is refined. You just want to linger there for as long as you can. Drink or hold.”

“The 2022 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese #22 was selected in "two to three parcels of old vines," Katharina Prüm explained. The nose still has a touch of yeast, and underneath, it shimmers almost with the crunch of a green but red-cheeked apple. The palate is utterly fine. This seems weightless and light, with the most serene balance of sweetness and freshness, coming across as effortless, unforced, with a subtle savoriness in the distance, waiting to make itself more felt in the future. For now, there is a gentle yet precise notion of white peach, tenderly sweet and utterly balanced. Supreme. Available at auction: 360 bottles, 12 magnums. (Medium)”

The step up here is one of power rather than just sweetness. Riper and more intense is a more accurate way of describing what’s happening. The style remains pure and ultra-fine, and while the Spätlese wines revel in juicy intensity, this bracket offers more power, flesh, complexity and length.

Balance is key to understanding the quality of Prüm’s 2022 Auslesen. These wines can sometimes be tricky to understand fully when young—not so for the 2022s; they already have the wow factor. Again, there is a big step up in intensity, and the difference between the vineyards shines through even more.

With such finesse, delicacy and digestibility, these wines are typically too delicate for sweet desserts (although they can work with light, fruit-based dishes that are not overly sweet). Match them with whatever works for you, but don’t forget that this level can work very well with savoury food, matching superbly to pork, game birds, savoury tarts, roast chicken, ceviche, sausage, and venison. They are also brilliant with almost all Japanese and Chinese dishes and terrific with a wide range of cheeses. Spice and fruit-based sauces do not worry them!

“This very concentrated and super-elegant riesling Auslese is still tightly-wound. However, it already has a very wide spectrum of subtle yellow fruit and wild flower aromas. Terrific structure behind the rich, but still medium-bodied palate. Incredibly long, slatey finish with staggering freshness that pulls you back for more of this Mosel masterpiece. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.”

“The 2022er Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese offers a superbly attractive and aromatic nose of pineapple, coconut, melon, yellow flowers, a hint of marzipan, herbs, and juniper, all wrapped in a blanket of smoke. The wine proves superbly creamy and delicately smooth as plenty of finely honeyed and ripe yellow fruits and almond cream join the party. The finish has great presence and intensity in the very long and captivating finish. The aftertaste is engaging and long.”

“The 2022 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese opens with a notion of baked peach, especially baked peach skin, aromatic, slightly caramelized with concentrated fruit. Peach compote sweeps onto the palate, ripe and still with bite, just as cooked peach flesh appears, expressive and sweet but not overdone. This entire flight is a lesson in restraint. The long finish and aftertaste are tempered with citrus, corralling that expressive peach. Lovely, restrained, elegant. (Sweet)”

The finish is slightly broader yet captivating and hugely long. The aftertaste shows candied grapefruit and orange zest. This is a gorgeous, ripe, and refined Auslese.”

(Sweet)”

Joh Jos Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2022 (1500ml)

“Still very youthful on the nose, this is crammed with ripe peach, plus more delicate notes of pineapple and mangosteen. It’s a minor miracle that this kind of concentration can be packed into such a sleek, medium-bodied palate. What an amazing mouthfeel this has thanks to the seamless integration of slatey acidity and ripeness. Very long finish with spot-on balance. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.”

Joh Jos Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2022 (1500ml)

“While 2021 played into the hands of the elegant house style, the 2022 wines show the Prüms’ mastery of the genre because every wine is defined by elegance and notable restraint in residual sweetness. Two thousand and twenty-two is as poised as ever, already present and exquisitely aromatic.” Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous

“With the rise of so many excellent winemakers in the region, one might have supposed that J.J. Prüm, with its profound conservatism, might have been overtaken and left behind. Not a bit of it. The Estate remains where it has been for decades: at the summit.” Stephen Brook, The Wines of Germany

“The Joh. Jos. Prüm Estate produced a superb collection of fruity-styled wines in 2022, which all shine through their subtle and filigreed elegance.” Mosel Fine Wines
