Our shipment of Zalto glassware is docking any day now, and there’s a new glass in town! Alongside restocks of all the key stems, we can now offer Zalto’s first new glass in over a decade. At 195 millimetres tall and 113 millimetres wide, ‘Balance’ is slightly smaller than the Bordeaux and Burgundy glasses, while the signature Zalto angle is even more pronounced. The idea behind ‘Balance’ was to design a glass that would bring out the best in new-wave artisanal/low-intervention wines that emphasise texture and structure as much as fruit. Michael Hinterleitner, whose family owns Zalto, explains, “We have been testing different prototypes for two years to create a glass that harmonises certain aspects of wines not often found in conventional winemaking.” So, after two years of intensive tastings and discussions with winegrowers and sommeliers, ‘Balance’ was born. Zalto recommends the glass for deep, complex whites–Chardonnay and full-bodied Riesling, for example–to fully show their depth and subtlety while harmonising aromas and flavours without concentrating one element. They also recommend the glass for complex sparkling wines, skin-macerated whites and reds made with high proportions of bunches. Zalto sent us some samples earlier this year, and we’ve had plenty of fun trying them out. So has Jamie Goode, as you can see here (the review for Corofin Wrekin Chardonnay comes free). Like every Zalto glass, it is mouthblown and combines beautiful delicacy with surprising robustness. “Owning an exquisite set of glasses like the Zalto Universals can be a joy… I think they are still hard to beat.” Eric Asimov, The New York Times
